Visiting Georgia is easy, cheap, and safe

Georgia and the entire Caucasus region are becoming increasingly popular among tourists from all over the world. Georgia is known for its ancient history, unique wines and cuisine, stunning mountain landscapes, and warm hospitality, and the best part is that all of this can be experienced in just two weeks.

Before you pack your suitcase, you should research all of the transportation options in the country and determine the best time to travel. As a result, we are here to assist you with your planning:

Before you pack your suitcase, gather all of the necessary information about visiting Georgia and determining the best time to visit. We are here to help you with your preparations in this regard:

Visa requirements:

Georgia is one of the world’s most tourist-friendly destinations due to its simple visa exemption system. Residents of more than 70 countries (including all European Union member states, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia) do not need a visa to visit Georgia for up to a year.

Citizens from more than 60 countries are eligible for a tourist e-visa, which can be obtained easily online for $20-25 USD.

Check Georgia’s visa requirements and learn more about visa categories here: GEORGIAN VISA INFORMATION.

Alternatively, you can apply for an electronic visa to Georgia through the Georgia e-visa portal.

Getting to Georgia

by Air:

Located at the crossroads of Asia and Europe, Georgia is easily accessible to tourists. Three international airports (Tbilisi, Batumi, and Kutaisi) provide direct flights to Europe, Central Asia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and other destinations.

Wizz Air, a Hungarian low-cost airline, flies from Kutaisi to Germany, Italy, Austria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Greece, and the United Arab Emirates.

Tbilisi International Airport serves as the country’s main hub. It works with major airlines such as Lufthansa, FlyDubai, Turkish Airlines, and Qatar Airways. Ryanair, another low-cost airline operating in Georgia, also operates from Tbilisi International Airport. Finally, Georgian Airways, the national airline, operates flights through Ukraine, Israel, and Western Europe.

By land:

If you prefer to travel by train, there are convenient direct railway connections between the South Caucasus countries. Regular trains from Tbilisi to Yerevan or Baku offer three ticket options: First class (SV) has a two-person cabin, second class (Compartment) has a four-person cabin, and third class (Platskart) has open-plan sleepers without cabins.

Another option for getting around the South Caucasus is to take a bus, a van (Marshrutka), or a private taxi. Land borders are open for international visitors.

When is the best time to visit Georgia?

Georgia is a popular tourist destination year-round. If you are more interested in cultural tours, the best months to visit this beautiful country are April, May, September, and October.

In the spring, when the weather warms and wildflowers begin to bloom, everything fills with the scent of flowering plants. There is nothing more enjoyable than strolling around in the warm spring sun.

During the summer, the weather is extremely hot throughout the country, particularly in the cities. Black Sea resorts are ideal for cooling off, getting tanned, and enjoying the active nightlife with friends. Meanwhile, Georgia’s mountain regions are ready to welcome those in search of fresh air and who enjoy hiking.

Autumn in Georgia is another popular travel season, with warm sunny days lasting until the end of October. It is harvest and winemaking season, and if you are interested in local traditional experiences, you should visit the Kakheti region. Furthermore, in October, you will be able to enjoy the scenic nature in its amazing autumn colors.

Winter is the best season for outdoor enthusiasts. Georgia’s winter resorts are becoming increasingly popular each year. Georgia currently has four ski resorts: Gudauri and Bakuriani in the east, and Svaneti and Goderdzi in the west. They all have a well-developed infrastructure for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels.

Safety:

Georgia is a safe place to travel alone. No one will feel lonely here thanks to Georgians’ warm hospitality. People here appreciate visitors and will go out of their way to make tourists feel welcome and safe while touring the country. However, as in any country, tourist scams and petty theft can occur, so it is best to follow the basic safety recommendations. For example, avoid carrying large amounts of cash in public places and always inquire about the price before purchasing anything from a street vendor or boarding a taxi.

Packing:

Packing for Georgia doesn’t take much thought. The main thing to remember about clothing is to avoid wearing shorts in religious settings. When entering churches, women should wear a scarf that covers their shoulders, chest, and head. Of course, comfortable and sturdy walking shoes are required. Rain jackets and other clothing that can be worn in layers are recommended for spring and autumn travel. Bring your swimsuit if you want to visit Tbilisi’s famous Sulphur Baths.

Travel Insurance

All visitors must have travel insurance. It is preferable to arrange insurance with a reputable insurance company that will cover personal injury, medical expenses, luggage loss, and expenses associated with tour cancellation.

ATM and cash:

Credit cards (Visa and Master Card) are widely accepted in the capitals of the South Caucasus. However, some locations outside of cities may only accept cash payments. It is preferable to bring a small amount of cash (in USD or EUR) to exchange for local currency. ATMs can be found in every town.

Travel expenses:

Georgia is a budget-friendly travel destination, but that does not imply that the service you will receive is of poor quality. It is impossible to say that Georgian food or accommodations are inferior to those found in other European countries. Even the most luxurious hotels and restaurants are still less expensive than in most other countries.

A tourist’s approximate daily budget varies according to their preferences: for the budget traveler, 25-30 USD per day can be more than enough, for the mid-range traveler, 35-50 USD per day, and for the luxury traveler, 55-100 USD per day.
