Few destinations in the Caucasus capture the imagination quite like Svaneti, a remote highland region where medieval watchtowers rise above glacial rivers, ancient villages cling to mountain slopes, and trails lead into some of the most dramatic alpine scenery in all of Europe. This 4-day Svaneti hiking tour from Tbilisi is designed for travelers who want to experience the best of the region without rushing, combining two of the finest hikes in the Caucasus with a visit to the legendary village of Ushguli.
Getting There the Smart Way
Rather than spending 9 to 10 hours in a car, your journey to Svaneti begins with a morning train from Tbilisi to Zugdidi – a scenic, comfortable ride across western Georgia that takes roughly six hours. It’s a quieter, more atmospheric way to travel, with views of the Georgian countryside unfolding from your window, and it keeps the cost of your tour lower than an all-road transfer. From Zugdidi, a private driver meets you for the final stretch into the mountains, arriving in Mestia by evening.
Shdugra Waterfall: Hiking Beneath Mount Ushba
On Day 2, you’ll head out to Mazeri village with your guide, the starting point for one of the most rewarding hikes in the region. The trail to Shdugra Waterfall winds through alpine meadows and forested paths before opening onto a breathtaking view of the falls, which plunge dramatically beneath the twin peaks of Mount Ushba – one of the most iconic and technically demanding mountains in the Caucasus. The round trip covers around 6 to 8 kilometres and takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, making it suitable for travellers with a moderate level of fitness. Afternoons are left free to rest or explore Mestia’s charming centre*.
* You can explore an old Svan house and a tower known as “Margianis Machubi” – a local defense stone tower (Koshki) rising from the back of the houses, you can climb on top of the tower to enjoy the stunning views os Svaneti.
Koruldi Lakes and Ushguli: A Day of Highlights
Day 3 is the centerpiece of the Svaneti hiking tour. The morning begins with a hike to Koruldi Lakes, set at roughly 2,700 meters above sea level. You will be transferred by car to the halfway starting point for Koruldi Lakes.
The ascent takes between 1.5~2 hours, and the reward at the top is extraordinary – a wide panoramic view of Mount Ushba’s twin summits framed against the open sky and reflections of the majestic Tetnuldi Mountains in the lakes. It’s one of the most photographed vistas in Svaneti, and for good reason. The descent takes around 1-1.5 hours, leaving the afternoon free for the drive to Ushguli.
TIP: Prefer a more relaxed day? You can also drive directly to the lakes, skipping the hike and arriving at the viewpoint with more time and energy to spare. Either way, the scenery is unforgettable.
Ushguli – a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, one of the highest permanently inhabited villages in Europe and one of the most remarkable places in Georgia. Its cluster of medieval Svan defensive towers has stood for centuries beneath the shadow of Mount Shkhara, Georgia’s highest peak. During your visit, you’ll see Lamaria Church, a sacred 10th-century place of worship that remains an important site for the local Svan community. There’s time to wander through the village, take in the scenery, and understand why Ushguli has captivated travelers, historians, and mountaineers for generations.
The Return
Your final morning in Mestia is relaxed and unhurried. In the afternoon, a private transfer brings you back to Zugdidi in time to board the evening train to Tbilisi, arriving late at night, with your driver waiting to take you back to your hotel. End of our 4-day Svaneti Hiking Tour.
